Medina Electric Cooperative was built by this community over 80 years ago to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy. In November 1938, Medina EC started out of the need to bring electricity to our rural area when big investor-owned utilities would not. People in our small towns knew that electricity would be beneficial to the farms, homes and businesses, and began going door to door to sign members up. They paid $5 to join the cooperative, with hope that electricity would soon be available. Now, Medina EC continues to provide our rural service area with electricity, powering farms, homes and businesses. Members still pay just $5 to join the cooperative and count on us to provide reliable, affordable, safe electricity while being committed to our communities.

In 1956, Librado Piña Sr., went into partnership with John W. Lewis to establish Lewis & Piña Custom Brokers. Mr. Lewis and Librado Piña Sr., started their business at 120 Market St., which prospered and eventually moved to 402 Chihuahua St. in 1965. Due to continued growth, the operation was moved to 1200 Guatemozin St. in 1973. Lewis announced his retirement the same year and the firm changed it’s name to Librado Piña, Inc. Today, L.P.I. operates all business transactions from 8901 San Mateo Drive in the Tejas Industrial Park in North Laredo. Initially, L.P.I. handled 3,000 shipments per year. Now it is a multi-faceted enterprise boasting record port entries in this border city and continuously seeking to set new records in shipments. Solely based on 1993 figures, L.P.I. handled 36,000 shipments and expects to exceed these figures in the future. The Laredo Morning Times, founded in 1881, is one of the oldest newspapers in Texas. It was acquired by Hearst in 1984. Tiempo de Laredo, part of the LMT family, is a Spanish-language daily that includes sports and feature pages as well as local, state, national and international news. The Laredo Morning Times also offers a popular website, lmtonline.com, that garners 1.8 million page views per month.

Hurd Enterprises, Ltd. is a fourth generation family business that traces its roots back to O.W. Killam. Killam came to South Texas from Oklahoma in 1919 and made the first commercial oil discovery in South Texas outside of Mirando City in 1921. O.W. Killam’s business was continued by Killam & Hurd after his death. Killam & Hurd was a partnership between O.W. Killam’s two sons, Winfield and Radcliffe Killam, and his son-in-law John G. Hurd. Killam & Hurd operated successfully in South Texas from 1946 until its dissolution in 1982. John G. Hurd and his children then organized Hurd Enterprises, Ltd. and opened an office in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio was chosen as the headquarters for the new business as part of a strategy of diversifying outside deep South Texas. Hurd Urban Development was organized by J.R. Hurd and his three sisters in 1992 to serve as the focal point for the family’s real estate investment and development activities. Hurd Ranch Company commenced operations in South Texas in 1985. The first Flint Hills lands were purchased in 1991.

Gateway Community Health Center (GCHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center. The organization’s administrative office is located in the city of Laredo, in Webb County, Texas. Since 1989, GCHC has been a local leader in establishing and providing excellence in health care for underserved population members of Webb County, Texas. The organization began as a sub-component of the local health department in 1963, serving only migrants in the area. As need grew, the organization responded. In 1989, GCHC became independent of the local health department as a 501 (c) (3) Corporation. In 1991, the organization was fortunate to receive FQHC status and has continued to evolve business practices to address the growth in demand for affordable access to care. In 2009, the organization successfully expanded its service region by receiving federal funding approval, through an application for Service Area Competition, to provide primary health care services for residents in neighboring Jim Hogg and Zapata Counties.
